Regine Tan Jing Zhen from J3 Birmingham and Anna Tan Wan Tzu from J2 Manchester emerged as the champion in the first-ever Hin Hua’s Got Talent (HHGT) which wrapped up on 20 June. Regine, with her rendition of `Symphony’, (sang to the beat of plastic cups played by Anna) beat 14 other contenders to clinch the title. The event, organized by the ELC Ambassadors Club (EAC) under the guidance of the English Environment Committee (EEC) comprising Mrs Siow, Ms Premalatha, Ms Renuga, Ms Regina and Ms Vani, was a great success as audience packed the auditorium in the Multi-purpose Block to support and root for their favourite contestants or classmates.
The first runner-up, Tan Hui Yi and Debbie had the crowd in stitches with their cheesy, but entertaining skit entitled ‘Animal Planet’ while the second runner-up impressed the judges with Adele’s `Someone like you’, sung with piano accompaniment. The consolation prize winners sang a variety of songs with some of their members playing the ukulele, the guitar, the piano or the cajon.
The judges were Ms Jolyn from ELC, Mr Omar Muzaffar from UiTM and Ms Alice Ong, a music teacher. Ms Jolyn has vast experience in music and is active in her church choir while Mr Omar Muzaffar is a member of two university bands and plays mu
ltiple instruments. Ms Alice Ong, the chief judge, is a Hin Hua alumnus. She used to teach music in Hin Hua and now runs her own music school. The judges were impressed by the students’ presentation and said that it was a tough competition, making it very difficult for them to decide on the winners. They also added that HHGT was a good platform for our students to discover and display their talent.
