Hin Hua’s Got Talent

 Reported by ELC

Regine Tan Jing Zhen from J3 Birmingham and Anna Tan Wan Tzu from J2 Manchester emerged as the champion in the first-ever Hin Hua’s Got Talent (HHGT) which wrapped up on 20 June. Regine, with her rendition of  `Symphony’,  (sang to the beat of plastic cups played by Anna) beat 14 other contenders  to clinch the title. The event, organized by the ELC Ambassadors Club (EAC) under the guidance of the English Environment Committee (EEC) comprising Mrs Siow, Ms Premalatha, Ms Renuga, Ms Regina and Ms Vani, was a great success as audience packed the auditorium in the Multi-purpose Block to support and root for their favourite contestants or classmates.
The first runner-up, Tan Hui Yi and Debbie had the crowd in stitches with their cheesy, but entertaining skit entitled ‘Animal Planet’ while the second runner-up impressed the judges with Adele’s `Someone like you’, sung with piano accompaniment. The consolation prize winners sang a variety of songs with some of their members playing the ukulele, the guitar, the piano or the cajon.

The judges were Ms Jolyn from ELC, Mr Omar Muzaffar from UiTM and Ms Alice Ong, a music teacher. Ms Jolyn has vast experience in music and is active in her church choir while Mr Omar Muzaffar  is a member of two university bands and plays mu
ltiple instruments. Ms Alice Ong, the chief judge, is a Hin Hua alumnus. She used to teach music in Hin Hua and now runs her own music school. The judges were impressed by the students’ presentation and said that it was a tough competition, making it very difficult for them to decide on the winners. They also added that HHGT  was a good platform for our students to discover and display their talent.

Below is the list of winners:

One month before the contest, an audition was held  during the first recess for more than a week, after which 15 teams (solo, pairs or groups) were selected to participate in the event. Among the 15, there was a rap battle (Theodore Roosevelt  vs. Winston Churchill) presented by Wesley Lau and Bernard Siow; a song-and-dance (by a group of 9 Senior 3 students),  and a skit while the rest were songs, some of which were a mash-up of two or more titles.

The winners received Popular book vouchers worth a total of RM240, the bulk of which was sponsored by the Parent-Teacher Association of  Hin Hua High School (RM210).  While waiting for the judges to deliberate on the results, a mini lucky draw was conducted to reward the audience for their patience and support for this event. The lucky audience (including contestants) walked away with  goodie bags containing stationery and snacks, sponsored by the EAC.  (More than 200 complimentary passes had been given away before the event for this lucky draw.)

The EAC and the ECC have undoubtedly achieved their objectives of  creating opportunities for Hin Hua students to use the English language and to discover their hidden talent, while at the same time, also creating an English environment in a predominantly Mandarin-speaking setting. Mrs Siow would like to thank Madam Boo, the vice-principal and HOD of ELC, all teachers and ambassadors involved for their cooperation, time and effort in making this event a success, and not forgetting the PTA for their sponsorship.

I think this event was really a good opportunity for our students to display their talents. Overall, taking part in HHGT has been a great experience for me. From the first practice to the finals, it had been a wonderful process. I was glad that the ELC Ambassadors Club offered a platform like this for us, students, and I hope that there will be more such activities in the years to come.

Participating in HHGT was a great experience for us. The contest was well-organised and everyone was cooperative. The event attracted a big audience who responded very well to each and every performance. Everyone should be given a chance to experience and try something like this. For us, winning the second prize was really unexpected. We were the only ones to do a comedy, and we tried our best. Many talents were showcased through this contest. We hope the teachers from ELC will consider organising more of such contests in the future.
