CISS Forum Competition 2017 The Best Chairperson - Derek Yuen

Reported by ELC

The 5th Selangor and Kuala Lumpur Eight Chinese Independent Secondary Schools Combined English Forum 2017 was held successfully at Tsun Jin High School on 15th July 2017 . This competition was organised by the United Chinese School Committees Association of Selangor and Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur and co-organised by Tsun Jin High School. Hin Hua High School team was formed by Derek Yuen Yee Jun (Chairperson, S1 Washington), Soh Xi Ken (1st Speaker, S3 Washington), Hing Mok Jiun (2nd Speaker, S3 Washington), Lim Jade (3rd Speaker, S3 Adelaide) and Lim Jia Yun, Ruth (Reserve, S2 Adelaide). Derek Yuen was awarded the Best Chairperson as he successfully conducted an in-depth but lively discussion with his strong command of English and interpersonal skills.

The objectives of this forum competition are to improve the level of proficiency in English, particularly in their speaking skills amongst students in the Chinese Independent Secondary Schools, to provide an opportunity for students to showcase their public speaking talents, to provide a platform for interactions between students and to raise their awareness on current and social issues.

The topic presented by our school team was on 'Foreign Languages.' The panelists played their roles as students who represented their class and society in presenting their opinion on the importance of learning foreign languages. They clearly stated their ideas in aspects like political, economic and social. They also touched on the problems encountered by one when learning  a foreign language. All in all, it was truly an in-depth discussion by all panelists and the chairperson.

Mr Ong Ee Seng, a lecturer in New Era University College, also the chief adjudicator for the competition congratulated all the participants on their competence and their flair for English language. However, Mr Ong commented that there is room for improvement of the overall quality of participants’ performance. He reminded all participants not only to have a lively presentation, but also to play their roles appropriately when presenting. He added that the adjudicators were looking for a more creative and lively forum in the future. All participants were advised to read widely in order to tackle the Q & A session more confidently with  detailed elaboration.

Again, we congratulate our school representatives for their effort and look forward to their continuous self-improvement.

Derek Yuen Yee Jun (The Best Chairperson) S1 Washington
In the beginning, I was still without experience with the whole “Forum” format. But I took it as an opportunity to enhance my knowledge in the area of speaking. I truly thank my team for being there patiently when I was struggling to get a grasp of being a chairperson, and I thank them for their knowledge and advice on becoming a good chairperson. The whole experience has been unforgettable, and I still cannot get over the fact that I was entitled to the “Best Chairperson” award. I would like to advise everyone to try to test “New” waters, only then will we improve and enhance our skills.
