The first ever Presentation Design Workshop held by the English Language Centre (ELC) on 16 April was an informative session aimed at equipping participants with invaluable skills to craft engaging and impactful presentations. The workshop was led by ELC teacher Mr Dannie Mar, who has a rich background as an digital designer and whose portfolio includes collaborations with renowned brands such as Samsung, Baskin Robbins, Slumberland, and Rolex. The workshop attracted 20 teachers and students eager to learn presentation craft.
Mr Dannie walked the participants through the ten-step approach, including understanding ‘Audience Demographics and Psychographics’, which is crucial in ensuring logical flow and key message clarity. The workshop also emphasized the importance of engaging visuals and consistent design elements, along with practical guidelines like the use of the 6x6 rule for concise bullet points.
Participants were also guided in the 10-20-30 rule: using only 10 slides, presenting for no more than 20 minutes, and using a font size of 30. Mr Dannie also highlighted the strategic use of white space and contrast to enhance readability and comprehension, and the use of high-resolution, animated, and quality visuals in our presentation slides.
Feedback from the 20 participants was overwhelmingly positive, with 100% of participants finding the session helpful and practical, and agreeing that they will be able to apply what they have learnt in the future. Some even suggested breaking down the workshop into a series of mini sessions to allow for more hands-on practice and deeper exploration of each concept.
This eagerness for continued learning underscores the workshop's success in empowering educators and students alike to communicate effectively through visually compelling presentations.
Ms Ng Yew Fong (ELC Teacher):
I have always been fascinated by how Mr Dannie is always able to create such awe-inspiring presentation slides. Attending the workshop had opened my eyes to some of the important features that should be taken into consideration when designing presentation slides. Mr Dannie revealed how we could source for high-quality visuals and the right picture format to use. Choosing the right font types is also very important and I realize that many of us teachers are probably still unaware that only certain font types stand out and that we should avoid the rest. And yes, I totally agree that we should not clutter our presentation without leaving any white space. Thank you, Mr Dannie.
Ms Chua Pei Chen (ELC Teacher):
Mr Dannie’s presentation slides always captivate me, so I eagerly signed up for his workshop as soon as it was announced at ELC. I was thrilled to discover numerous helpful tips on designing slides that leave a lasting impression on the audience. I am grateful for Mr Dannie’s generous insights and look forward to applying what I learned to my own presentations.
