As part of English Day activities held on 23rd April, the English Language Centre (ELC) organised a beginner-friendly hand lettering workshop at the school’s Wash Painting and Calligraphy Studio from 3 to 4:30pm. Miss Jolyn, the deputy head of ELC, led the workshop alongside Emily Wong, a 2023 Hin Hua graduate. The workshop attracted a cosy group of three enthusiastic students and two teachers who were eager to explore the art of hand lettering.
The workshop aimed to expose participants to some fundamental skills and techniques of hand lettering such as line variation, spacing as well as different lettering styles. Participants were provided with a brush pen and some learning materials such as papers and practice sheets, which were part of the RM10 registration fee.
Under the guidance of Miss Jolyn and Miss Emily, the participants practised basic lettering drills by repeating simple strokes and shapes to familiarise themselves with the use of brush pen and hand movements. After that, they moved on to practise writing letters, words and ultimately, phrases. When the participants had gained confidence in their hand lettering skills, they were asked to write their favourite motivational quote on a clean piece of paper, which was their final product of the workshop.
Overall, the hand lettering workshop organised by ELC on English Day proved to be a resounding success, thanks to the dedication of Miss Jolyn, Miss Emily and the enthusiastic participation of the attendees. It is hoped that this workshop not only provided practical insights into hand lettering but also helped the participants to discover a newfound passion for arts.
Emily Wong Wei Lyn (Workshop Facilitator)
It was definitely a great experience coming back to Hin Hua to facilitate the Hand Lettering workshop with Ms Jolyn. I’m really thankful for this opportunity. We taught the workshop attendees the basic strokes in hand lettering and how to combine them to form words. Even though the size of the workshop was on a smaller scale, it was good that we could focus on guiding them individually. I hope they had fun learning this new skill as much as I did. Practice makes progress in everything we do; same goes for lettering!
Miss Jhanani A/P S.Nagaraja (English Language Teacher)
I truly enjoyed the workshop. The materials provided were comprehensive and well-prepared, allowing the participants of all skill levels to engage meaningfully with the content. The clear explanations and demonstrations made the techniques easy to understand, even for a beginner like myself. Overall, I left the workshop feeling inspired and motivated to continue exploring the art of hand lettering.
Miss Khong May Yoke (Chinese Language Teacher)
The workshop was attractive and interesting. I found hand lettering to be quite similar to the “Running Script” of Chinese Calligraphy where strokes and curves intertwine to form intricate and elegant characters. I really enjoyed learning how to hold a brush pen and the steps of hand lettering. Perhaps the school can hold an English hand lettering competition or an exhibition of English Hand Lettering in the future.

First, I would like to thank the English Language Centre for organising this wonderful workshop. At first, I joined the workshop for fun, but I really learnt a lot and enjoyed it from the beginning until the end. Hand lettering is truly a relaxing activity as it puts my mind at ease. Learning the basics of hand lettering can be of big help when I want to design posters or make greeting cards for my family and friends. Overall, attending the workshop was a pleasant experience for me. I hope the ELC will continue to organise more fun and meaningful workshops like these!
Emily Loh Si Yu (J2 Washington)
The moment I heard about this hand lettering workshop, I decided to give it a go because I saw this as an opportunity to learn new things, connect with others and explore the amazing journey of learning hand lettering. Big thanks to the instructors for teaching us the way of using a brush pen that can create masterpieces with elegant and pretty letters that are aesthetically pleasing to the eye. The instructors were very friendly and helpful. In a nutshell, I do not regret participating in this workshop, and it was worth the money. Most importantly, it was fun.
