Scrabble Championship 2024 Unveiling Lexical Legends Through the Games of Tiles

The English Language Centre of Hin Hua High School hosted the highly anticipated Scrabble Championship on 25th June 2024 in the school hall from 3pm to 5pm. This event aimed to promote linguistic skills and strategic thinking among students and staff, fostering a spirit of healthy competition in an educational environment.

The event was graced by esteemed guests Mr. Gan Kian Gee and Mr. Tan Thong Hing, volunteer administrators of the Tan Sri Yeoh Tiong Lay & Puan Sri Tan Kai Yong Aided Hin Hua High School English Language Centre Teachers & Students Training Charitable Fund. Their presence added prestige to the championship, inspiring the participants with their commitment to education and community service.

A total of 120 participants, including 9 non-English subject teachers and staff took part in the competition. Participants were divided into four categories - Category A: Junior 1 and Junior 2 students; Category B: Junior 3 and Senior 1 students; Category C: Senior 2 and Senior 3 students and Category D: Teachers and administrative staff.

Each participant engaged in two 40-minute rounds of Scrabble games. Then, the top four scorers from each category advanced to the grand finale, where they competed in a 20-minute final game to determine the ultimate champion in each category.

The Championship 2024 was a resounding success, showcasing the linguistic prowess and strategic thinking of our students and staff. It exemplified the collaborative efforts of our sponsors, volunteers, and participants in promoting educational excellence and fostering a love for learning through engaging activities.

We would like to express our gratitude for the generous support of Tan Sri Yeoh Tiong Lay & Puan Sri Tan Kai Yong Aided Hin Hua High School English Language Centre Teachers & Students Training Charitable Fund which sponsored 24 sets of Scrabble board games, ensuring a seamless and engaging tournament experience for all participants.

We look forward to future events that continue to enrich our students' educational journey and strengthen our community bonds.

Kua Sheng Kang (J3 Melbourne)
My experience participating in the Scrabble Championship was truly spectacular. Despite having to compete against my friends, I still had a lot of fun. I am very much looking forward to these kinds of events in the future from ELC.

Lim Zhen Hui (J3 Adelaide)

I didn't expect to win the competition. I was just having fun and chilling when playing the games. I have to thank my English teacher, Mr Dannie, for letting me compete in this competition, although I didn't get first place, I still feel satisfied and the prizes were not bad too.

Yeo Eason (S2 Chicago)

As a member of the English Ambassadors Club, I had the honour of manning the stations in both the preliminary and the grand finale rounds in Scrabble Championship 2024. It was exciting for me to see everyone’s enthusiasm and dedication to the game. I hope this competition will be held again next year and I eagerly look forward to participating as a station master once again.

Phyllis Tee Yu Xin (S2 Washington)

Being a station master at this Scrabble Championship was a truly eye-opening experience for me. I am grateful for the opportunity to participate in such an event and was amazed by the large number of participants. Being a Senior Two student can be tough, but that did not stop me from signing up as a volunteer in this event and I am glad I did. I was initially hesitant due to being unfamiliar with Scrabble but I decided to embrace the adventure of trying something new. Thank you ELC for giving me this opportunity to learn and serve.

Ng Jing Yang (Staff of Academic Department)

This was my first time participating in a Scrabble competition and it was an absolutely awesome experience for me. I was deeply amazed by the power of words. Every letter and every word has infinite possibilities and charms. This is perhaps another fun way to learn words! In addition, I think this is also an opportunity to communicate with and learn from others. In the journey ahead, I hope that the Scrabble competition can be held all year around, so that all students can continue to challenge themselves and explore the endless possibilities of language.
