Comes out 3rd in HELP 7th International English Debate Competition 01

Reported by ELC

It was a glorious moment when the ELC debate team was announced as the second runner-up in the HELP University Chinese Secondary Schools (CSS) 7th International English Debate Competition 2018, held on 8 July 2018. We would like to extend our warmest congratulations to our debate team members, Bernard Siow Terng Fong (S1 Adelaide), Anthony Teh Kai Hung (S3 Berlin), Derek Yuen Yee Jun (S2 Washington) and Alex Aw Zhi Sen (J3 Chicago).

This annual competition is organised with the aims to provide CSS students with aplatform to use English competently, master the public speaking skills, boost confidence in the presentation of facts, and develop the ability to conduct research on topical issues and current affairs.

All participating schools at Northern, Central and Southern Zones in Peninsular Malaysia and a mixed zone from East Malaysia and overseas took part in the competition held separately in different months. Our team defended and argued their thoughts confidently in the  preliminary rounds, octo final, quarter final and semi final and gloriously won the second-runner up  on 8 July 2018.

Due to time constraints, our English debate team led by Bernard Siow had to build their cases online collaboratively. Their trainers, Mr Azim Nadzari and Mr Muqriz Mustaffa Kamal,  from Malaysian Institute Debate and Public Speaking (MIDP), also  provided  a lot of professional advice during the training sessions. It was with a tremendous effort that they  managed to win the second runner-up. The chief adjudicator commented that our team had done a great job. He added that they could have gone more in depth with clearer arguments and evidence to support their stand and surpass the proposition team.  Nevertheless, we are truly proud of their excellent performance.

Lastly, we would like to express our appreciation to Tan Sri Yeoh Tiong Lay & Puan Sri Tan Kai Yong Aided Hin Hua High School English Language Centre Teachers & Students Training Charitable Fund for funding the year-long English debate training.
