The 2nd Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Negeri Sembilan Independent Chinese Secondary Schools English Forum Competition was held successfully in Kwang Hwa Private High School on the 20th of August. Our team brought home the 1st Runner-Up prize with the theme “education” amidst a tight competition involving 10 schools!
Our team, comprising Mabelle Tan Ern Xhi (chairperson, S3 Chicago), Chui Chi Kuan (1st speaker, S3 Ottawa), Eugene Gan Ming Tao (2nd speaker, S2 Athens), Yap Jia Qi (3rd speaker, S1 Canberra), Siew Yue Ying (reserve, S3 Wellington), Phang Hong Hao (reserve, S3 Washington) and Chow Yong Xiang (reserve, S3 Manchester), impressed the panel of judges with their discussion on the necessity of a university degree for success. Of the three speakers, Eugene Gan played the role of a successful real estate agent who did not further his studies, Yap Jia Qi was a successful engineer who completed his university studies, and Chui Chi Kuan was a Senior Three student who would be graduating high school soon. The team discussed the topic based on three main areas - the benefits of a university degree in terms of building success, the financial issues of pursuing a university degree, and the definition of success. All in all, the preparation done by all members of the team was robust, and the Q&A practices were filled with ideas thrown and research done.
This year, one of the invited adjudicators was none other than our alumni, Dr Too Wei Keong, who is currently serving as an Associate Professor in University of Nottingham, Malaysia. He and the other adjudicators commented that students should avoid forcing an accent as when it came to the Q&A session, students would revert to their natural accents, making the presentation unnatural. This was a plus point for our team as they all presented naturally. Also, the adjudicators advised students to avoid playing roles that are too far-fetched or irrelevant to their topics.
It is commendable that the team got themselves prepared in a very short time after being shortlisted through an audition. Once again, we would like to send our heartfelt congratulations to the team for their hard work and achievement, and look forward to their constant self-improvement.
