Bringing Home the 1st Runner-Up Prize! The 2nd Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Negeri Sembilan Independent Chinese Secondary Schools English Forum Competition 2022 02

Yap Jia Qi (S1 Canberra)
Participating in this competition has certainly been monumental for me. I’ve gained a lot throughout the entire process, like learning how to speak persuasively or how to carry myself on stage and speak charismatically. It was definitely a learning experience. We even got second place - not bad! Lastly, I would like to thank the teachers and my mates. Without them I don’t think I could have given my best. I would definitely participate in the competition once more if there even is one next year.

Eugene Gan Ming Tao (S2 Athens)
This was my first time doing anything of this sort, and I must say that I'm glad I gave it my best! I didn't know what to expect exactly, but going into the audition, I wasn't very confident. A few days later, I received news that I had been chosen to compete. I felt excited yet nervous, since I had never been good at public speaking. In the end, we trained long and hard to get 1st Runner-Up for Hin Hua High School, which was quite surprising for us. I hope an opportunity like this will come up once more.

Mabelle Tan Ern Xhi (S3 Chicago)
Firstly, I would like to thank Ms Prem for encouraging me to join the audition despite the doubts I had of myself at that time. I would also like to thank Mdm Boo, Ms Jolyn, Ms Shyne, Ms Evon and Ms Amanda who have shown us support by coaching us and giving us feedback. My teammates have been an immense encouragement to me, giving me support when pressured and advice when needed. Though we had a short period of training and bonding, I am very proud to have this achievement shared together with them. Thank you all very much!

Chui Chi Kuan (S3 Ottawa)
I went from feeling nervous during the audition, to excited when I got selected, to awkward when the whole team first met, to tired during practice, to anxious before we went on stage and then to feeling ecstatic when we received our prize. Having this experience and opportunity to learn so much has been a wonderful roller coaster ride. Thank you to all the teachers for their guidance and support, and cheers to all my teammates for the wonderful times.

Siew Yue Ying (S3 Wellington)

It was quite a fun and exciting experience! I was elated when I got selected, but my anxiety grew as the day of the competition drew closer, because a week after the training period was our S3 UEC Trials. The short training period was not only filled with many memories, but the efficiency of the team made it so that no time was wasted. All of my teammates had their own strengths and we were able to learn from each other, for this competition and for our future endeavours.  There were many fun and precious moments that I’ll never forget, which include casually socialising with teams from other schools and even some team bonding moments. Thank you to all of my teammates and teachers who helped in guiding and supporting us.

Phang Hong Hao (S3 Washington)

I would like to thank all, including the teachers, for allocating time for our audition to make our dream come through. My gratitude to all of you, for being caring and giving me a sense of family. To be honest, I felt insecure when I received the email informing me that I had been selected for this external competition. During the two weeks of preparation and bonding sessions, I also felt as though I was not as good as others who have strong foundations in English, but the training sessions gradually built my confidence. Fortunately, we made it and showcased our best and won the 1st Runner-Up prize.

Chow Yong Xiang (S3 Manchester)

What a great experience! I would like to thank all the teachers that led and gave advice to us, always willing to help. Preparing for the competition just right before the S3 UEC Trials was challenging for obvious reasons,  but the bonding and efficiency of the team were just out of this world. Not to mention the outstanding public speaking and critical thinking skills my teammates have too. Although being just a reserve, I still learned a lot from this experience. Meeting these highly skilled teammates is already a win for me. I will never forget the precious times where we struggled with pronouncing “materialiscally”, walking around and bonding like we’re old friends with other schools’ teams, and the freestyle rap we did.
