Matilda Reading Club01

Do you know that 8th September is International Literacy Day? As teachers, reading has always been at the heart of our efforts to nurture English Language as it has tremendous power to fuel the development of all aspects of language ability. To cultivate the reading habit among students, with the sponsorship from Tan Sri Yeoh Tiong Lay and Puan Sri Tan Kai Yong Aided Hin Hua High School English Language Centre Teachers and Students Training Charitable Fund, the English Language Centre held its very first reading club on one of the remarkable books written by Roald Dahl, MATILDA. The book won the Children’s Book Award shortly after it was published back in 1988 and has continued to delight audiences ever since.

Eleven students and three teachers came together on 15 September 2020 to have an intimate sharing session on MATILDA on the 9th floor of the Science and Technology Tower. The event started after Miss Shyne gave a short introduction of the world-renowned author, Roald Dahl and his book, MATILDA The presenters of the day were Ha Zhe Qing from J3 London and Tan Hwei Shan from S1 Canberra. Together, they took the particip
ants on a journey to the heart of Matilda Wormword, the main character of the story. They first shared how they came across the book. Hwei Shan shared that a reading camp she joined back then introduced Roald Dahl to her and since then, she has read three of his books. She also stressed that reading Roald Dahl’s books gives her more opportunities to be exposed to English language since she comes from a Chinese-speaking background. On the other hand, Zhe Qing told the audience that she was hooked to Roald Dahl’s books after her cousin introduced her to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. All in all, she has read ten Roald Dahl’s books which she borrowed from our school library.
