Student Research Showcase 2018 02

Wong Xin Yi (J2 Darwin)
On the first day of the research showcase, we were totally inexperienced and scared out of our minds. We didn’t do a good job explaining and we were stuttering on our words. But we admit that we weren’t well prepared in the first place and we didn't have a clue on how it was going to be like. When the second day rolled around, we worked together really well and it wasn’t so bad. We all had fun and our teacher even gave us drinks! A few days later, our teacher told us that we were going to be doing a display that Saturday when the teachers were having a workshop. Somehow, somebody thought that we were good and this good news sent a ripple of surprise through our team. That day, not many came to our stand, but a few people did and we tried our best. We got compliments and we’re really proud to be a part of this and it would be amazing if we do something like that again.

At first, we were really worried about having this showcase as it is our first time joining the research project showcase. Making the poster was a big challenge for the four of us because we were busy with our sports day event the week before this research showcase. Luckily it worked out in the end. We learned a lot from this showcase especially the ways to present in public. It's our pleasure to have this opportunity to share our ideas and opinions in front of our friends and teachers.

In all honesty, I felt very honoured to have been chosen to present my research project. The research project was very intimidating at first as I was a newbie with zero ideas on how to conduct a research. But as the project progressed, I began to understand how research was conducted and how the report of said project was written and it was all very fascinating. I am very fortunate that I get this opportunity to learn about research and able to share this experience with my other friends who are not from Hin Hua High School. I want to thank Ms. Radha for her patience and teachings throughout this entire project. And also to my classmate and friend, Derek for he inspired me to have the desire to do my best.

Looking back at the first time when we (our class) were told to do the research project, to be frank, we're actually a bit dumbfounded. But when I tried to think on the brighter side, it would be good to prepare us for university studies, so my team completed the project without any complaints, we had learnt much on research skills too! Especially when we were first taught how to do a literature review and how to include an appendix, we were able to  do something we only get to see in academic reports. It was both new and interesting for us as we were exposed to academic learning tasks  as early as in high school. Also, there was a presentation of our research to teachers from other Chinese independent schools who attended a workshop on 4th August. In general, the entire project is a fresh breath of air amongst our regular English studies.
