Student Research Showcase 2018 01

The Student Research Showcase 2018 once again took the centre stage of attraction displaying skills and talents from both Senior and Junior presenters at the Humanities Corridor of Hin Hua High School! The Senior Two and Senior Three English for Academic Purposes (EAP) classes successfully showcased their research on two consequent days on
23rd and 24th July, followed by Junior Two and Three classes on the 25th and 26th July, 2018.

Mr. Soh, the principal and Mdm Boo, the vice-principal and head of ELC and Ms. Evon the deputy head of ELC launched the EAP Showcase themed ‘Together Everyone Achieves More’ on the 23rd July at 9.10am. This event was witnessed by the research presenters, students and ELC teachers.

Soon after the official opening ceremony, teachers and students visited the booths which had interesting topics ranging from school matters and right up to students’ personalities.  Some of the interesting topics presented were “A Study on the Effects of Artificial Intelligence on the Human Race, The Usage Of Life Compass : A Case Study Among Senior Three Students, Digital Attendance: A Case Study Among Senior Three Students and Gender Roles and Career Choices: A Qualitative Case Study Among The Senior Three Students.” The research on Digital Attendance showed that the implementation of this system will benefit both the students and teachers in terms of time and classroom management. Another research entitled “The study on effects of Artificial Intelligence on the Human Race” revealed an interesting finding where artificial intelligence is found to pose a greater threat to humanity because  humans will lose their jobs as artificial intelligence advances as the future is rather unpredictable. All participants not only presented with confidence, but they also displayed very informative information in their posters. The student research showcase was a unique platform where the participants built effective communication skills and confidently presented the value of their research to the general audience. There was an encouraging turn out from both the teachers and students during these four days.

This was the second time around for both Junior Three and Junior Two students to participate in the research showcase . All junior students were exposed to some basic research skills, academic writing and setting of questionnaires. Different requirements are set for different levels so as to raise standards in all students. It is commendable that all research papers are done in Google Drive using Google apps like Docs, Sheet, Slide and Form where collaboration is enhanced. This helps to promote ICT literacy among all students of Hin Hua High School.

The objectives of carrying out research in both the Junior and Senior levels are to teach learners to practise research skills in order to promote inquiry based learning and to use academic language and style appropriately. It also helps to promote collaboration skills among our students. By the end of the course, these students are able to produce a comprehensive research paper. Students are also exposed to ethical issues when conducting a research. In EAP research papers, students are taught referencing system and paraphrasing skills. This also gives opportunity on the development of critical thinking skills. By engaging in such activities, students will have gained increased understanding in using English to communicate in academic contexts by the time they step into the tertiary level.

Overall, this year all participants were very enthusiastic in  showcasing their respective findings. They were all geared up to convince and impress the audience with their research outcomes. There were also a few first-time presenters who were nervous and excited at the same time but somehow due to their collaborative effort they managed to stay calm and composed throughout their presentation.
