Lesson Study - “When we collaborate, we improve” 02

During the closing ceremony, there was an exchange of opinions and clarification of some issues concerning teaching and learning across the floor. In response to a participant’s doubt about the practicality of lesson study while teachers are always under stress to complete teaching a book, Mdm Boo encouraged the teachers to be selective on the lessons that require teaching and assign self-study tasks; in addition, the scheme of work should serve as a guide where flexibility is allowed. When a concern was raised regarding the limitations on conducting student-centred activity in large classes, Mdm Boo emphasised that collaborative activities which involve pair and group work can be conducted even in large classes if the teachers could cultivate habits among students to quickly form teams from adjacent seats without having to move about much. The Q & A session was ended by Dr Teoh with a summary of the implementation of Lesson Study in Hin Hua High School.

The feedback received from the participants was very encouraging. Many commented positively about how well the workshops were conducted by Hin Hua English  teachers. One of the participants said, “This workshop provides a clear insight of real education, in which most education institutions are commercialized due to contemporary society pressure. Lesson study is well defined and explained for teachers to carry out the study.” Another also added, “The post- teaching activities were fun and very engaging. There was good teamwork shown by Hin Hua High school teachers.” All participants went home with knowledge gained from the two workshops, different learning experience and copies of materials shared by the presenters.

ELC would like to extend its appreciation to Segi College for its sponsorship of tote bags, ELC Ambassador’s Club, English Society, Photography Society, Scouts, Junior & Senior research presenters, two emcees from J1 Wellington and all involved in making this event a success.

ELC Teachers’ Feedback on CISS event on 4th August, 2018

Mr Dannie Mar Yi Yuan
The event was a great focus and very insightful. It really sharpened our perspectives in planning a purposeful lesson. As teachers, we were also able to take back lots of resources and follow up ideas to use in our lessons. It was highly relevant to our lessons as the country is striving for a better system for students to learn effectively and efficiently. I am sure teachers who came for the workshop had also gained practical skills and an insight into lesson study.

Ms Lavaniyaa Mailer
The teacher sharing among the Chinese Independent schools hosted by ELC this year has made all the teachers at ELC shine in every
aspect in their teaching career. As for me, this has been an eye opener and an added value to my career development. I have learned a lot from this workshop; as teachers we can strive for the best and be confident in what we do.
