“2018 The Belt and Road, our future global youth summit” 01

On 18th-23rd March 2018, seven student representatives from Hin Hua High School: Alicia Tan, Lee Mei Chie, Goo Ruo Yun, Nicholas Chow, Kam Sue Herng, Derek Yuen, Wong Kuan Hua, and Mr. Lee Huei Shyang, attended an international forum named “2018 The Belt and Road, our future global youth summit” hosted by the Affiliated High School of Peking University, Beijing. The summit had the objective to promote collaboration between students from different backgrounds, engage in dialogue and understand key global issues in relation to the benefits of the Belt and Road Initiative. The organizers of the event had invited more than 100 secondary school students from 8 different countries to participate in this event.

For the summit, our seven student delegates had to prepare a 15-minute presentation on two topics, ‘The historical significance the old silk road brought upon Malaysia.” and ‘How the Belt and Road Initiative is transforming our country, Malaysia‘. Here, we would like to express our gratitude to Puan Sri Tan Kai Yong for her encouragement and support, our former principal Mdm Ng Swee Geok, the principal Mr Soh Chin Choon, vice-principal Madam Boo, and teachers: Mr. Yan Wei Yang and Mr Lee Huei Shyang for providing us help and support along the way. Besides teachers from our school, we were also given help by a lawyer, Mr Loh Chang Woo, who gave invaluable feedback on the content of our presentations.

After one month of preparations, the big day finally arrived. The group departed from KLIA and arrived in Beijing at 3 in the morning due to a flight delay of 8.5 hours. Despite the harsh cold weather, the group was given a warm welcome by the co-director of the summit and brought a smile to everyone’s face. In spite of having only just an hour of sleep, we got ready for the first day.
