人物专访 Heriot Watt University - YTL Foundation-Hin Hua School Scholarship Dato' (Dr.) Yeoh Sock Kian: Opportunities to be Successful Adults

1. What is the aim of the establishment of the YTL Foundation?
YTL Foundation was established in 1997 to provide opportunities to deserving students who otherwise found it a challenge to pursue tertiary education. Over the years, YTL Foundation has expanded its role to provide thought leadership, champion the use of technology and be an agent for redefining the teaching and learning process in
schools.
Through these initiatives, YTL Foundation aims to continue building better societies through better education.

2. It is known that the YTL Foundation will award Hin Hua High School students with a 5+3 scholarship. Please explain the characteristics of the 5+3 scholarship.
Successful Hin Hua applicants will have the opportunity to receive a full scholarship to Heriot-Watt University Malaysia. The scholarship will include tuition fees and living expenses, which will be disbursed every 6 months, and the tuition fees will be paid according to invoice from the university.
The Hin Hua-Heriott Watt scholarship is divided into two types:
1. Construction related courses
They include Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, Quantitiy Surveying and Construction Project Management. Students, who are successful in gaining a scholarship in any of the construction related courses, will have the opportunity to transfer to the UK campus for 1 year.
2.  Non- construction related courses
Open to all courses offered at Heriot Watt University Malaysia. There will be no UK transfers for non-construction related courses.

3.  Is   there  a  work  contract  involved? What is the term of contract?
A work contract is only applicable to construction related courses. Once the scholarship is confirmed, students will sign a scholarship agreement that states a 5-year bond with the organisation. For non-construction related courses, there will not be any contract.

4. What is your motivation or drive for providing Hin Hua High School students with these scholarships?
My parents were great advocates of the school. My father was the Chairman of the Board of Governors who worked closely with the principal and teachers to provide the best education for the students.
By providing the students with scholarships, we can ensure that there are opportunities for the school’s high achievers to continue their tertiary education. My father always wanted the students in Hin Hua High School to continue their education and be successful adults.

5. As we know, Dato Kian is an alumnus of Heriot-Watt University UK. Please share with us some memories of studying in the university.
Heriott Watt is a reputable university, known for its construction related courses. Being in the construction business, my experience in Heriot Watt had played a big part in preparing me to face challenges when I first started working.
The University whether in the UK or in Malaysia continues to keep its status as a reputable university.

6. Your beloved father, the late Tan Sri Dato' Seri (Dr.) Yeoh Tiong Lay, the life honorary chairman of Hin Hua High School Board of Governors, had contributed selflessly to the school. You have been following in your father’s footsteps and devoted yourself to the betterment of education in Hin Hua High School. Please share with us how your father had influenced you.
My father always paid importance to education. He knew that education could lead students to a better life. Throughout the years, watching him involve himself in helping raise the standards of education in Hin Hua and in other schools, has inspired me to follow in his footsteps. As we know, educating the youth today is creating leaders for tomorrow.

7. What advice would you give to Hin Hua High School students?
To work hard and make full use of the experience university life has to offer.
