Neighbourhood Project Short Film Competition

Reported by ELC
Passion for video making has encouraged a few of our Senior and Junior students to team up and produce a short video to capture the true “essence” of what neighbourhood means to them. It was a challenging task, especially to create a video to show the challenges faced by each individual in a modern and disconnected society. One of our participating teams emerged as winners of the Best Scriptwriting award in the Neighbourhood Project 2017 competition, organized by Scholarlist. This short film managed to catch a lot of emotion, nostalgia, and neighbourly values, and was scripted in a way that is relatable to neighbourhoods all over Malaysia.

The team was led by Kok Keng Leong (S1 Washington), along with his crew and cast, Chang Jun Xian (S3 Los Angeles), Guo Ruo Xuan (S3 Adelaide), Ng Xue Er (S3 Adelaide), Mah Yen Chil (S3 Washington), Soh Xi Ken (S3 Washington), Wong Jun Yee (J3 Paris), Yeow Yao Xue (J1 Toronto) and Ng Xiang Yee (J1 Manchester). They bagged RM1,000 cash for their effort. Together with this, the team was also presented with certificates for reaching the Top 20 position in national level.

Meanwhile, together with this winning team, another team from Hin Hua led by Thomas Rustiawan (S2 Athens), along with his members, Felicia Lai Yee Sin (S2 Athens), Sammie Ng (S2 Los Angeles), Bridgette Gan Bin Xin (S2 Toronto) and Lee Wen Ying (S2 Adelaide), was also given certificates for reaching the Top 20 position  in the Neighbourhood Project Short Film Competition this year.

Congratulations to all the winners and we continuously encourage all students to participate in more external competitions not only to gain substantial experience, but also to showcase skills and uncover one’s personal aptitude. If you didn’t get an opportunity to watch the video, you can scan the QR code below to have access to it.

Kok Keng Leong,
The director (S1 Washington)
I have gained a lot of experience in filmmaking after joining in this competition. It was not only fun to work with my teammates, but I also learnt to communicate in English and express myself creatively during the process. It has definitely been a worthwhile mission for me and my teammates, and we are glad that we have made the school proud!
