Storyboard Competition

Reported by ELC
The Storyboard Competition was held the second time by the English Language Centre this year. Students of all levels were provided a platform to show their understanding of a literature text in sequential drawings creatively. Through the creation of a storyboard, students learnt to analyse the traits of the main characters, summarise the story that they had read, and visually present it in an art block.

The main objective of this competition is to promote students’ literary taste and build a solid foundation for a lifelong love of reading. In doing so, it helps students to interact with the texts they read and bring their understanding to life in an engaging and fun way. The challenging part of this competition is where students have to illustrate exposition, rising action and conflict, falling action and resolution in an in-depth six frame storyboard.

The competition was divided into two categories – Junior and Senior. Each team comprised not more than 5 members. The story had to be based on either a story/novel read or a theme taken from ‘7 habits of highly effective people’. Th
is competition had provided students with space and time to work collaboratively on creating their storyboards and gain collective knowledge from their peers and also teachers in the process.

The judges found it difficult to select the winners, especially among the Junior classes, as the shortlisted entries were overwhelming. These entries had to go through 2 selection rounds before the final results were confirmed.  However, the judges also commented that students need to polish up their summary skills so that the gist of the text can be fully grasped and well-illustrated in their storyboards.  The award giving ceremony was held on the 16th August 2016 at the English Language Centre. All the winners were awarded certificates and books sponsored by Scholastic Malaysia Sdn Bhd. We also take this opportunity to thank our sponsor for their continuous support.

Once again, congratulations to all winners and participants of the Storyboard Competition, 2016. Below is the list of winners for Junior and Senior categories.

Yap Peng Siang (S1 Dublin)
When we started doing this storyboard, we did not think of winning any prizes. We just wanted to try our best to complete it. We did face some problems when we were doing this storyboard, but with the help of our group leader, we managed to solve them without much difficulty. We got excited when our teacher said that she was going to send our storyboard for the Storyboard Competition. Later, when we came to know that we had won a prize, we were in seventh heaven. We would like to thank our teacher for giving us guidance for the improvement of our storyboard, and to ELC for giving us a chance to take part in this competition. We hope that we will have more opportunities to participate in other similar competitions in future.
Ng Ying Fang (S1 Los Angeles)
We felt excited about this project as our group members were all responsible and creative. We went
to great lengths to complete the storyboard on time without much complaints. We were on top of the world when we were informed of our winning a consolation prize in this competition. Through this storyboard competition, we have understood  the story of Tanjung Rhu better. Apart from that, we have also realised the importance of cooperation and collaboration in order to get things done.
