Ms. Malini
The first ever Deepavali Carnival held at Hin Hua High School on Wednesday 4th of November 2015 was the brainchild of Mdm Boo, Vice Principal cum Head of English Language Centre. I was “happily-surprised” when she informed me of her idea on having a Deepavali Carnival in school.

The purpose of the Deepavali Carnival at Hin Hua High School was to provide an opportunity for students to explore the cultural diversity of communities in Malaysia and to foster intercultural understanding. In order to make it significant and meaningful for all, especially the students, we teachers at ELC brainstormed and finally managed to get things planned for the carnival. One of the main displays was the “Rangoli Kolam” an Indian folk art in which patterns are created on the floor using coloured rice. Photo and Saree booths were another “hot spot” that made the carnival even more livelier as students and staff were so eager to get themselves wrapped in sarees just to have a feel of it. Henna or Mehndi a traditional Indian art of painting on hands using paste of henna leaves was another popular booth that was crowded with students. There was also a splendid array of traditional Indian sweets and delicacies served for all students during the carnival.

It was not an easy task to start off with, as a lot of planning and organising  had to be done in a short period of time to bring about the festival of light to life at Hin Hua High School. The preparation for the Deepavali Carnival kicked off soon after our second semester examination was over. During the preparation, the teachers of ELC and Indian teachers from BM Department worked hand in hand with our students to get things organised for the event. The festive mood was truly felt by the whole school as they contributed in some way or the other to the success of  the Carnival. The Deepavali Carnival at Hin Hua High School was successful mainly due to the positive encouragement and support from the school administrators and we the ELC teachers would like to thank the school for creating this platform for enabling us to share our tradition and culture to the rest of the school community.
