Creative Writing Competition

Reported by ELC

The Creative Writing Competition organized by the English Language Centre was successfully concluded this year on  26th May 2015 with an   encouraging number of entries from the Junior and Senior levels. The Creative Writing Competition is intended to inculcate the love of writing among  students as well as to foster and develop their  inherent need to express themselves. Besides it also helps to foster creativity and resourcefulness in the process of writing among students. On the whole the competition encourages students to develop  universal values in a fun and creative way, through the medium of good writing.

The Creative Writing Competition was open to all level of students with different themes  as shown below:

Level Topic

                          possession”
        Prose- At least 100 words
EIM 2 Verse- Begin with: I hate to admit it, but …
        Prose- At least 150 words
EIM 3 Verse- My Inspiration
        Prose- At least 200 words
EIM 4 Verse- Change!
        Prose- At least 250 words
EIM 5 Verse- What a difference!
Prose- At least 300 words
EAP Verse- Life worth living
Prose- At least 350 words

Students were given prior notification on the topics and rules by the respective English language teachers before their final work was produced. Students were encouraged and motivated to think “out of the box” in order to produce their own unique piece of writing. Some teachers even took it to a greater height by making it a compulsory writing practice in class. Students expressed great enthusiasm and produced writing of high calibre. There were different interpretations of writing and a variety of clever narrative devices used to help describe and develop their plots. According to the judges, much thought was put in use in some of the winning entries. Students used adventurous         languages and characteristics,  too.

Entries came in from all levels of students ranging from EIM1 to EAP. Once all the entries had been received, the teachers in-charge of the competition distributed them to the panel of judges (English teachers) for each category to shortlist and select the winning entries based on the specified judging criteria. The judges worked intensively hard to read, re-read and grade each entry during the term break to come up with the final selections. The judging criteria included originality in storyline, creativity in message, flow and organization as well as the overall effect of the entry. The judges chose a variety of winners, ranging from comedic stories to touching memoirs and fantastic tales. The winning pieces from each category are displayed around the reading corner at ELC. Besides, it has been a practice that winning entries from the Senior Three classes are reproduced, printed and published in their annual yearbook. In order to    encourage and motivate students to take part in such competition, their participations are given due recognition by stating them down in their English Progress Report at the end of each  semester.

The prize-giving ceremony was held at ELC on July 31, 2015. The winners were awarded with   certificates and books sponsored by Scholastic Grolier (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. which has been constantly inspiring our young writers through their generous encouragement and support through these years.

Thank you to all who had participated and congratulations to all the winners!
