The Choral Speaking Competition 2015

Reported by ELC
The Choral Speaking Competition 2015 kicked off on 24 March 2015 during the assembly for Junior level classes, which was the first time this event was held in such a grand fashion. In addition to improving speaking skills such as pronunciation and enunciation, choral speaking encourages teamwork and for students to be creative in the way they convey the message within their texts.

Each class in the Junior Section was encouraged to conduct choral speaking as a speaking activity of the first semester  and  register for  the  selection  round.  The students tried their very best to write or edit their script based on poems or short stories with creativity. They then practised with movement, pitch, tone,  volume and special sound effect to demonstrate the beauty of English Language.

Out of the nine English classes that were shortlisted for finals, Junior Three classes swept the top three prizes: in first place was J3 Washington, followed  by  J3 Birmingham in second place and then J3 Manchester in third place. The two consolation prizes were won by J2 Adelaide and J2 Melbourne. There was a new award introduced in this year’s competition -- the award for Best Conductor -- which was won by Tang Sheng Wei of J3 Birmingham.

Ms. Sastina, the chief judge, praised the participating  classes  for  their  efforts,  and commended them on their performances. The competition had also provided the students with opportunity to display their talent and creativity as well as to enhance team spirit among the students when nearly 35 students of a  class  managed  to  read  out  a  short  text
harmoniously.

Champion Team
Oh Yue Ning, Eileen (J3 Washington)
It all started with an announcement. News about the Choral Speaking Competition spread, and soon everyone knew about it. That included our class, J3 Washington. After having a discussion, it was unanimously decided that our theme would be “Stop Bullying.” With the help of the Internet and everyone’s cooperation, our final product was a huge success.

There was not much time for us to prepare, we realized. We did our best in a few weeks and practiced as much as we could. On the day of the competition, our presentation was better than usual. Way better.
When we knew that we got the first prize, we were ecstatic. Thunderous claps, booming cheers, deafening shouts. But it was a good one, really.  It will be a memorable  experience  for
everyone of us, including Ms. Chua !

Winner of the Best Conductor award
Tang Sheng Wei (J3 Birmingham)
I’ve  never thought of winning the award as the Best Conductor, and I really appreciate it. First of all, I would like to thank my Junior 1 English teacher, Ms. Juliana Choo, for choosing me as the conductor. I played the same role in the following year, too. This is our last year participating in the Choral Speaking Competition as we are in Junior Three. We wrote the script ourselves in Google Drive with some guidance from our teacher. We put in a lot of effort, practising hard, but in a fun way. Although  I  have been the conductor in the past two years, I was still a little nervous because of stress. On the stage, smiling, I told myself to keep calm so that my friends could have faith in me. Time flew by very fast, but I enjoyed every second and every movement on stage. Thank you, everyone, for making this possible.
