ELC Reading Club#12 - Lord of the flies “A young adult classic that fascinated and thrilled readers for many years”

The English Language Centre held its twelfth reading club on a young adult classic entitled Lord of Flies on 14th July 2023. Lord of Flies is a psychological thriller written by William Golding and the book won the Nobel Prize in 1983 for its perspicuity of realistic narrative art and the diversity and universality of myth. In 2005, the novel was chosen by Time magazine as one of the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to 2005.

The reading club was held online via Zoom from 7pm to 8.20pm and was joined by 64 participants. Most of the participants that evening came from S2 Berlin and S2 Manchester which are taught by Miss Nai Sheah Qin who recently conducted a mini project based on the novel. The presenters of the session were Dominic Lim Yi Shen from S1 Washington and Amos Wong Shi Yi from S1 Canberra.

Dominic started the session by giving a brief introduction of the author of the book, William Golding. After that, Amos spent time talking about the plot which concerns a group of young British boys who are stranded on an uninhabited island and their disastrous attempts to govern themselves but later revert to savagery. The presenters also took turns to introduce the characters in the story to the audience, elaborating their backstories as well as their traits. They also invited the audience to share their thoughts about the characters they like and they had an exchange on their favourite characters in the story. Then, Dominic and Amos presented some meaningful quotes they stumbled upon while reading the novel.

Though Lord of Flies was written decades ago, it remains as a good read until today. This is due to its mythic quality, a universal side we relate to no matter how much time has passed. The themes brought out by this novel - civilization versus savagery, order versus chaos, law versus anarchy can be inspected under the lens of what is happening in the news today, particularly in terms of governments and the amount of control they wield.

Dominic and Amos ended their sharing by recommending a few books for further reading which are The Inheritors by William Golding, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Mud, Sweat and Tears by Bear Grylls and Rejection proof by Jia Jiang.

I am really happy that under the encouragement of Miss Nai, I participated in the ELC Reading Club for the first time. Through this experience, I got to experience the multifaceted nature of reading. We can understand stories by listening to others’ sharing and understand that different people have different reading outcomes and feelings. I hope that in the future there will be more of such reading clubs.

This is the first reading club I have attended and I am already dumbfounded. I would like to compliment Dominic and Amos for doing such a great job in delivering the storyline and analysing the character traits. Their coherent responses to the questions and feedback from the participants were also very impressive. Many participants spoke up their thoughts and their perspectives of the book made me perceive the story very differently. Overall, I enjoyed the experience and time spent.

Ding Xuan Kai ( S2 Manchester )
Participating in the Lord of the Flies Reading Club is a whole new experience for me. It was unexpectedly interesting as I always thought that reading clubs are usually boring. The two presenters did a great job sharing their opinions of the book in a way that was comprehensible to me. It helps me to have a clearer understanding of the whole plot of the book.

Ang Yu Xin ( S2 Manchester )
I originally planned to go to a gathering with my friends but I was obligated to attend the reading club. I did not really enjoy it at first because I was thinking about the gathering that I couldn’t go. When the presenters started presenting, I couldn’t help but continue listening because it was very interesting. Honestly, I did not try to analyse the book much after reading the first chapters so I was happy to hear the other students’ opinions and I felt inspired. Thank you ELC for hosting this event.
