Marble Run

      “Marble Run”

After-Exams English Language Enrichment Programme Learning Never Stops!01

It is noticed that many students are well aware of the use of Google Translate in their daily life. While the convenience is appreciated, over-dependence on the online translation tool may form some limitations in learning new vocabulary, be it for their writing, projects or other English-related activities. In order to provide more suitable and helpful resources to students, the English Language Centre invited Mrs Siow, who has 33 years of teaching experience in the English language from the ELC, to share with all the Senior One students the use of appropriate online tools to facilitate their learning of the English language. The main focus of the workshop was to introduce online collocation dictionaries as references for students. Overall it was a fruitful session, and we hope that students will use these resources in the future to better their language proficiency.

Ms Shyne ( ELC teacher)
The session conducted by Mrs. Siow was very useful to students. Not only did she teach them how to use an online collocations dictionary, she also showed them how they can use words in different contexts. If students include this tool consistently into their language learning, I am sure they will improve tremendously, especially in their writing.

Fujiana Tanoto (S1 Melbourne)
My experience in this collocation class was very new and amusing; it's not like the usual workshop or seminar which bores me. Collocation was always a topic that I am poor at, and the website that Mrs. Siow showed us was convenient and beneficial for both beginners and intermediates. Thank you ELC for hosting this workshop, and I hope that we can have more workshops like this in the future!

Low Shu Ling (S1 Berlin)
From this workshop, I have learnt a few phrases that I didn't think could go together. The use of collocations dictionary was something useful and it could help me with sentence constructions and essay writings.  It definitely helped increase my knowledge. It is fun having seminars like this once in a while. Ms Yew Fong conducted the workshop by asking interesting questions and had some interesting giveaways for students who took part during the Q&A session.  If there's a similar activity in the future, I hope to learn more vocabularies that are more advanced and also useful in life.

After-Exams English Language Enrichment Programme Learning Never Stops!02

Critical thinking is a core competency that students need to develop by the end of their secondary education. Mr Tom Linley provided a critical thinking practice by using the works of Bansky, an anonymous street artist from Bristol who paints thought provoking pieces of artwork, as a point of discussion. Mr Tom showed the students a few of his pieces, and encouraged students to discuss the meaning behind the artwork. He was impressed at some of the responses given by our students. During the Q&A session, Mr Tom was asked what the biggest handicap that would cause someone to be less able to develop critical thinking was, to which he answered ‘narrow-mindedness’. He emphasised the importance of keeping an open mind, while at the same time being able to stand on your own principles and opinions and not be swayed by others too easily. It is alright to agree to disagree. We would like to thank Mr Tom for his insightful sharing and hope that our students can think more critically in the future.

Christmas is Near! A time of giving, forgiving, love and joy01

From the 7th to the 29th of November, the English Language Centre, in collaboration with the Guidance Department, teachers, staff, students and parents contributed over 400 units of necessities to the Grace Home Old Folks Home. Teachers, students and staff took tags that had the home’s wishlist (such as toiletries, supplements and foodstuff) hung on the ELC Christmas tree and donated them based on their own budget. Some teachers and students contributed as a class (both English and original classes), and some students got their parents involved as well. There were also societies and departments that contributed to the cause. The response was so overwhelming that the Christmas gifts took up all the space under the Christmas tree. We would like to thank all participants  for gifting  the home with their daily needs, sharing love and hope to the residents of Grace Home.

Ms Shanthini (ELC teacher)

The Christmas ‘Season of Gifting’ Event is a felicitous event initiated by the ELC  as Christmas is a celebration of love, joy, and peace and these are the greatest gifts that we can give to others. It was heart-warming  to see the overwhelming support from everyone for this event. I am happy to be a part of Hin Hua, in particular, the English Language Center, to have spread love, joy, and peace to the Grace Old Folks Home and everyone - the joy of giving and the joy of receiving.

Mr Liu Kiu Chin (Head, Co-curriculum Department)
“It is more blessed to give than to receive.” This is truly a meaningful statement. During festive seasons, sharing our blessings is a wonderful thing, because as we celebrate, we can share our joy and blessings with those who may feel that it’s just another ordinary Christmas. We believe that they will feel our warmth and love as they receive our gifts, and feel joy in their hearts. Lastly, the Co-curriculum Department wishes one and all a Merry Christmas.

Yew Jin Harn (S2Athens)
When Miss Wendy encouraged us to participate in the Season of Gifting activity, we, S2 Athens, agreed to it immediately. All of us, including Miss Wendy, contributed RM2 each to buy a gift for the elderly in Grace Home. We originally wanted to buy large muscle pain patches but it didn’t work out since we could only buy a few packets with the money we had. We then settled on buying floor cleaners instead and our class monitors were able to purchase eight bottles of floor cleaners. We boxed them up, wrote that it was from S2 Athens and Miss Wendy on the tag, and placed it under the Christmas tree at ELC. We sincerely hope our act of kindness will fill the hearts of the residents at the old folk's home with warmth and happiness on Christmas day.

Collaborating with the Culinary Society, the English Language Centre organised a gingerbread man baking workshop that was open to the Senior One and Two students on the 15th of November. Within 2 hours of opening the registration, all 36 slots were filled. Participants were taught how to make the gingerbread dough and icing sugar for decoration. Each team was assisted by a Culinary Society member, and was led overall by the Culinary Society committee. It is commendable that the Culinary Society members worked out the recipes and instructions in English. They even insisted that the English language be spoken among the participants throughout the workshop! Not only did all participants walk away with their handmade gingerbread men at the end of the workshop, they had fun interacting with friends in English.

Poster Competition 2022 Integrating Art Making into English Language Learning01

The English Language Centre is now in its 5th year of organising the poster competition. This competition aims to encourage students to demonstrate their collaboration skills and bring their understanding to life in a fun way. Additionally, it fosters creativity and encourages students to showcase their talents through the making of posters.

This year, students at each level were assigned the following themes: “Kindness” (Junior 1), “Social Media Safety” (Junior 2), “Wildlife Conservation” (Junior 3), “Fake News” (Senior 1), “Ecosystem Restoration” (Senior 2) and “Money Matters” (Senior 3). The participants were encouraged to submit their posters digitally or in hardcopy. Not only has this competition created a platform for students to collaboratively showcase their creativity and imagination, it also required them to  create written and visual texts in English. All the participants are to present a description explaining the choice of colours, visuals and graphics, the wording or slogan created and the message conveyed through their artwork.

There were altogether 138 poster submissions, making the selection difficult for the judging panels. The judges were pleased to see students’ creativity in designing their posters with appealing and vibrant colours. Moreover, the illustrations used on the poster are closely connected to the theme, with well-conveyed messages and comprehensive descriptions in relation to their images, colours and layouts. There were participants who cohesively blended the content and design to create meaningful purpose/cause. However, there is still potential for development. Participants are advised to pay closer attention to the assigned themes in order to create an informative poster. Overall, the participants have put in a great effort to create stunning posters with meaningful messages based on the themes.

We would like to congratulate the winners and express our deepest gratitude to all participants. The winning entries will be published in the Hin Hua Love Reading Ezine magazine and uploaded to the ELC Google Sites.
