Excellent Award: Ng Ai Hui, Jason Seh Jun Siong, Wendy Wong Qin Ying (J1 Vancouver)

Theme: Joy
Teacher: Ms Ke Li

Pink symbolizes good health and youth. In addition, yellow is the colour of sunshine, hope or happiness. Therefore, we colour the poster’s background in pink and yellow. We design a study room in a house because there is no safer place than home during the Covid-19 pandemic. The study room is well decorated with a study table, window, desktop, and flowerpot. They have raised the beauty of the room in the poster as well. The slogan of the poster is ‘What we earn with joy we never forget’. The meaning behind this slogan is that you should immerse yourself in the joy of learning so that you can learn better. Last but not least, we strongly believe that learning should be life-giving and joyous.

First of all, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to our English teacher, Ms Ke Li for encouraging us to participate in the Poster Competition. We encountered some difficulties such as not being able to communicate with group members physically and also the limited use of wordings or stickers in the Canva app. However, we managed to brainstorm some ideas and share our information about the theme of the poster through Google Meet. We were also able to work collaboratively among ourselves and design the poster creatively despite some challenges. In a nutshell, we are greatly honoured to receive the Excellent Award as this is our first year at Hin Hua High School.

Theme: Vision 2030

We are all equal. Regardless of our gender, humans are allequal. This poster is designed to mainly focus on women's rights. But first we need to clarify that gender equality is a human fight, not a female fight. Our vision of 2030 is to end all forms of discrimination against all women and girls everywhere, and by discrimination, it means sexual harassment, physical violence, domestic abuse, employment opportunities, equal pay, leadership and so on. It is indeed not fair for females to encounter various kinds of injustice while the male can enjoy natural advantages without any hard work. Therefore, people have been questioning, why is gender equality important?

The stereotyping of gender roles has long existed since the beginning of human civilizations. From ancient China’s patriarchal society to the mistreatment of women workers during the British Industrial Revolution, females were seen as disposable individuals with no human rights. To this day, many still suffer the same fate, becoming victims of abuse and mistreatment. Although movements like #MeToo have done wonders, they still cannot cure the problem at its core. For gender equality not only saves the lives of countless females, but it will also enable every individual, regardless of gender, to see each other without prejudice.

We designed this poster based on a cover of a magazine. We used striking and vibrant colours to protrude the positivity and energy that we are trying to spread on this particular topic. On the other hand, colliding coloured visionaries gives out a mystical yet contrastable feeling that shows out the title ‘Vision 2030’ which could relate to our current situation on gender equality. On top of that, we used a quote by Emma Watson who is an English actress and activist that stands by gender equality just like Helen Keller and other contributors before them. Lastly, we also inserted some minor details like whitening some of the words on her quotes which should read as ‘opposing gender’ and declaring our aim and approach once again below.

It was indeed a great experience working on this poster. Gender equality is definitely not an easy topic to discuss. Nevertheless, we wanted to try our best to convey the importance of gender equality and raise the awareness of  gender discrimination that still exists. Although we had faced some limitations during the process, we managed to produce an informative poster that has resulted in winning an excellent award. Lastly, we would like to extend a special thanks to our teacher, Ms Evon, for her guidance and support throughout the entire process.
