‘My School’ Newsletter Competition

Reported by ELC

Hin Hua High School turns 70 this year. As Hin Huarians, we know, deep in our hearts, that our school has gone through ups and downs before it stands out as one of the highly prestigious secondary schools in Klang today.

In conjunction with Hin Hua’s 70th anniversary, the English Language Centre has also organised three inter-class competitions themed ‘My School’ to celebrate our school birthday.

The first competition to kick off in the first semester was ‘My School’ Newsletter Competition, with the aims to raise students’ awareness of school affairs and to help develop their research and writing skills with collaborative efforts. This competition was open to all students from Junior and Senior levels. They were encouraged to form groups of not more than 5 and produce an A3 size newsletter in not less than 400 words to convey the significant theme. They had to focus on at least two sub-topics of the following as their content: school events, education, science & technology, community & charity, international / national events, history, school hero and campus facility.

Many English teachers made it as one of the projects that involved all their classes to participate. In the process, students got to know more about their school through interviews and research, as well as acquire some skills to write news reports and design layout. We received plenty of entries, especially from Senior classes. Every single copy of newsletter contained a creative masthead, catchy headlines, news articles on various topics and significant photographs with interesting captions. They were the outcome of participants through collaboration. We thank all the participants for their concerted efforts and congratulate the winners on their winning pieces which are informative and innovative.

Producing a newsletter was not an easy task. We greatly appreciate our beloved teacher, Ms Evon for guiding us throughout the whole process. The most difficult part of the process was the usage of academic terms. Luckily, we had Ms Evon helping us out. Besides, teamwork was the most crucial part throughout the whole process. We really enjoyed the process of creating the newsletter and it is a memory to be remembered forever.

To be honest, we were not very clear about what to do with the newsletter at first. Then we consulted Ms Chua and our friends for more tips. Soon we started our project by allocating our duties. Every teammate had a topic to write about, so the tasks could be equally assigned. We came up with the idea of interviewing some classmates from the original class to make our content more solid and interesting. The newsletter was soon completed without difficulty. We strongly believe that our teamwork played an important role in the making of our newsletter.
