Enchanted Echoes: Unveiling the Magic of International English Day

Held at Hin Hua Garden and Ren-Ai Square for the first time, the International English Day event on 23 April this year was a magical celebration of language and culture, with a sprinkle of Disney enchantment. Co-organised by the English Society, the English Debate Society, the ELC Ambassadors’ Club and the ELC, this event aimed to ignite students’ passion for the English language and broaden their horizons by bringing the use of the language into relatable, fun and engaging activities. The event featured a variety of activities, ranging from cosplay, hand lettering, pickleball and even a booth with free English books for students.

The event opened with a High School Musical dance flash mob by the Dance Society which instantly captivated the audience. The surprise appearance of several English teachers and ELC staff among the mob added to the excitement. The event buzzed with even more energy as the students from the Guitar Society showcased their talents through soulful guitar melodies and live singing performances.

The ELC Ambassadors’ Club members also brought their favorite characters to life through creative cosplay, transforming into the likes of Tinker Bell, Maleficent, and Belle from Beauty and the Beast, adding a whimsical touch to the day's festivities. Students who managed to answer Disney-related questions received a small gift.

A mini hand-lettering booth led by ELC’s Deputy Head Ms Jolyn Ong ignited the artistic flair among the participants. This mini booth served as a warm-up to the Hand Lettering and Calligraphy Workshop that was to be held after school.

On the other side, Scrabble matches challenged the contestants’ linguistic prowess, while the introduction of the latest craze in town, Pickleball, made the event more accessible. Players just needed to say an English word every time they hit the ball with the paddle-like racket. Undoubtedly, the pickleball court was the rowdiest spot of all with spectators cheering merrily for the players.

Adding to the excitement, students received the gift of knowledge with free English books giveaway, encouraging a love for reading and learning beyond the event.

The International English Day this year not only celebrated the universal language but also fostered a sense of community and creativity within the campus. It was a day where language and imagination intertwined, leaving a lasting impression on all who participated.

We would like to give a big shoutout to the Guitar Society, Dance Society, Art Society, ELC Ambassadors Club, Photography Society, Reading Club, English Debating Society, and English Society who have dedicated their time and effort in making this event a success.

Yong Kai Seng (2023 Alumnus and current ELC Tutor):

Same story, different characters. Same place, different feelings. International English Day 2024 was definitely one of the pages in life that I won’t hesitate to bookmark. Getting involved in the preparation phases and seeing everything come to fruition was memorable, but being one of the members in the flash mob (when teachers crashed the dance) was absolutely priceless. Perhaps it was because I never really participated in English Days during my schooling, or perhaps it was the smiles and laughter on everyone’s face, or perhaps it was simply a break from work; I remember myself smiling as well. All my “thank yous” are directed to ELC and everyone — teachers, staff, and even students — who made all of these possible. Thanks for making my experience here in Hin Hua even more interesting than it already is.
