ELC Reading Club#15 Fahrenheit 451 Combining Intellectual and Fun Elements through Extensive Reading

On May 21, 2024, The ELC Reading Club finally returned to physical mode, marking the first in-person session since March 2020. Unlike the previous reading clubs, this special session, dubbed the Books and Bears Reading Club, encouraged participants to bring along their beloved plush companions, fostering an atmosphere of warmth and companionship.  Held on the 9th floor of the Science Tech Tower, the session saw the venue decorated with yellow picnic mats, cuddly soft toys, and fairy lights, providing a cosy and inviting atmosphere for the participants. This reading club focused on Ray Bradbury's classic novel Fahrenheit 451, a dystopian classic that has garnered several awards, including the Prometheus Hall of Fame Award and the One Book, One Chicago Selection Award, since its publication.

The reading club that afternoon was led by Kimberly Koay Zhe Yenn from J2 Ottawa and Chen En Qi from S3 Athens. 40 students and two teachers joined the session, most of whom were from Miss Jhanani’s J1 Canberra and J1 Washington classes. The presenters skillfully led a thought-provoking discussion, covering various aspects of the book, including the story plot and analyses of the characters. They also picked out some impactful quotes from the book and discussed with the audience how relatable they were to their daily lives.

The session buzzed with active participation from the audience, as students eagerly took turns to share their thoughts about the book. Though a few admitted that they did not read the book prior to the reading club, they agreed that the session sparked their interest to read Fahrenheit 451. Towards the end of the session, a lively Q&A session was conducted, further exciting the participants as they could win some treats for answering the questions about the book correctly.

The return to physical meetings breathed new life into the Reading Club, providing members with a unique opportunity to connect face-to-face and deepen their appreciation for literature. The session on Fahrenheit 451 proved to be intellectually stimulating and left participants eagerly anticipating future gatherings.

This was the first reading club I have taken part in and I think it is super fun. Initially, I thought book clubs like this were boring and dull but I was wrong. The presenters did their job well and presented in a humorous way that made us laugh hard. I also went to the reading club with zero knowledge of the book but after the session, I had a very clear picture of what the book was about. I gained a lot from this session and I will definitely join the ELC Reading Club in the future.

The ELC Reading Club was really interesting. The presenters and the teachers in charge were nice. I also like how the venue was set up and decorated. It was really cute for us to sit on the yellow picnic mat rather than on the chair as usual. This reading club made me interested in reading books again.

I personally feel that attending this event was a very good experience. The presenters did an amazing job making the atmosphere more relaxing. They introduced and summarised the book quite well, and the idea of bringing soft toys was creative.

Two days ago, I went to the Reading Club organised by the English Language Centre of our school. I think this reading club was a fun and enjoyable experience; even though I was kind of forced into it, I had fun. I think the presenters did a good job presenting the book, their improvisations and jokes really made my day. After this session, I became even more interested in the book than before. In conclusion, I think this reading club was a great idea.

Aside from the fact that I had to go home late and did not get any Oreos, the reading club was really fun. The presentation was interesting and the presenters explained the book well. The most exciting part of the entire session was definitely the Q&A.
