Bringing Home the 2nd Runner-Up Prize! The 3rd Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Negeri Sembilan Independent Chinese Secondary Schools English Forum Competition 2023

The 3rd Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Negeri Sembilan Independent Chinese Secondary Schools English Forum Competition was held successfully in Chong Hwa Independent High School, Kuala Lumpur on the 25th of August. Our team brought home the 2nd Runner-Up prize amidst a tight competition involving 8 schools!

Based on the theme given, ‘agriculture’, Fujiana Tanoto (chairperson, S2 Melbourne), Tan Yen Jin (1st speaker, S1 Canberra), See Sheng Tien (2nd speaker, S2 Melbourne), Lim Jia Quan, Philip (3rd speaker, S1 Chicago), Amos Wong Shi Yi (reserve, S1 Canberra), Lim Shien Yah (reserve, S2 Adelaide) and Chee Xin Yu (reserve, S2 Adelaide), impressed the panel of judges with their discussion on the possibility of sustainable agriculture in addressing food safety and security. Tan Yen Jin, playing the role of a scientist, gave an overview of what sustainable agriculture is and the importance of utilising sustainable practices to ensure the safety and security of our food chain. See Sheng Tien, a farmer, looked at the practical side in terms of feasibility and challenges, plus the support and funding needed by farmers to make a shift from traditional to sustainable practices. Lim Jia Quan, Philip, gave his views through the lens of a businessman, covering the possibility of short term food scarcity versus long term food security, and the growing trend of the need for healthier food options. All in all, the team made sufficient and necessary preparations, and when it came time for the Q&A, our team did well as it was one of the questions they had addressed during their intensive training session.

At the end of the competition, the judges gave some constructive feedback for further improvement. They commented that the topics were challenging, but overall students did well. They also stated that there was a lack of interaction, so some forums seemed one-way and flat. All in all, they commended everyone’s efforts in the forum.

This year’s team was selected based on their performance during our school’s internal forum competition. Though the preparation time was limited, our team pulled through successfully. We also had 3 supporters who attended the competition to cheer our team on. Once again, we would like to send our heartfelt congratulations to the team for their hard work and achievement, and look forward to their constant self-improvement.

Fujiana Tanoto ( S2 Melbourne )
This was my first external competition, and I felt so lucky to be able to take part with this amazing team. I couldn’t have done it without the help of every single member of my team, from the main panels to the reserves. Throughout the competition, I observed different forum styles of each school representative, and I learned a lot from them. At first I was unsure about joining the team, but I decided to push myself and aim for a higher goal. Another thing I’ve learned is to explore new topics frequently, keep up with the times and live life to the fullest.

Ms Premlatha ( English teacher, ELC )
The HHHS team effectively collaborated and coordinated their efforts. The team’s dynamic was impressive. They were constantly engaged in discussions and it is commendable to note that the team showed great teamwork. The members respected each other’s opinion and contributed to the overall quality of the discussions. The forum presenters exhibited a commendable level of confidence while presenting their viewpoints during the presentation. They also presented notable articulation and poise. During the Q&A session, the team was able to provide well-reasoned arguments and supporting evidence. Overall the effort put in by the whole team is commendable.

Amos Wong Shi Yi (  S1 Canberra )
Despite the lack of preparation time and some miscommunication, thanks to the amazing patience and understanding from the teachers, alongside some out-of-the-world coaching from Bernard, a graduate from our school, we were somehow able to pull through. This was truly a refreshing experience. For someone who is so used to public speaking, forum was something that felt familiar yet eluding in many ways. It was both confusing and intriguing for me throughout this journey to try to familiarise myself with this new territory. And I am glad to have been able to do it alongside this team. I thank God for the chance to get to know them, research with them, train with them, and see how insanely well versed they all are in respective ways. I am also thankful that we developed good chemistry in such a short amount of time, and that I got to help out with some style and intonation issues. Most of all, I appreciate the friendships I have built through this event, and I hope that we’ll have a chance to go on this rodeo again.
