The 1st Highschool International Online Case Competition (HIOCC) organised by Asia Pacific University took place in July 2023 and the Hin Hua team was crowned champion! The mission of this competition is to cultivate young global talents to learn, develop critical thinking, and hone their problem-solving abilities. Each team of four were given a real-world scenario or social problem and a set amount of time to develop the best solution. A total of 10 teams from our Senior 2 & 3 students participated in the competition. Two teams, the TSIA and the Fujiwara Tofu, were chosen as the top four to compete in the finals, with team TSIA being crowned champion. The students represented the school well in this international level competition and made us proud.
In the competition finals, the TSIA team was given a topic on Building Bridges of Knowledge (BBK): A Sustainable Education-focused Social Enterprise. In this category, the primary focus is on companies that aim to create a positive social impact through their business ventures. The participants were challenged to develop business models that are financially sustainable while also generating social or environmental benefits. Hence, students had to do a SWOT analysis on the given case and this involved intense critical thinking. Researching skills were also employed in order for students to come up with possible solutions and opportunities to address the problem.
The judges conducted a qualitative evaluation on each team, and the feedback offered to team TSIA was very positive and encouraging. The judges commented that team TSIA provided very solid solutions to the comprehensive case with excellent background data support using SWOT analysis. Furthermore, the presentation was delivered professionally, and a comprehensive description of the issue was provided, along with incredible solutions.
Again, we congratulate our school representatives on their excellent achievement and look forward to their constant effort in self-improvement.

This competition gave us a great opportunity to learn something new through research. The entire journey was so intense as we only had 24 hours to solve a complicated case in the finals. I am honoured to have participated in this international competition which actually gave me lots of perspectives from different parts of the world. I'd like to acknowledge the guidance of our commerce teachers in the past on business case studies, which led to our success today, as well as the ELC teachers for their support. Lastly, I am proud to tell my teammates that we had done a great job as a team.

I feel appreciative to have had the opportunity to participate in this competition and am glad to have won the first prize. Through this competition, I have learned the importance of teamwork and the ability to search for relevant information. The knowledge that I gained from high school helped me so much as I could apply them to solve the cases that were given during the competition. Lastly, I would like to thank my team members as together we made great efforts to solve different given business cases in a limited time, and gracefully, we succeeded.

I am extremely grateful for the golden opportunity to participate in HIOCC 2023. Throughout this remarkable journey, it has been an absolute honour for our team to engage in thought-provoking exchanges and share experiences with other exceptional groups. Undoubtedly, this experience has fostered tremendous growth, equipping us with invaluable knowledge and insights. The dedication and exemplary performance exhibited by each individual in my team has been truly remarkable. Once again, thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

Participating in this HIOCC competition was an exhilarating experience that pushed the boundaries of my analytical and problem-solving skills. We had been given limited time to analyse a complex business case and develop a strategic solution in a diverse team. It was very stressful for me as I have never had any experience with it. It forced me to collaborate with my teammates efficiently and critically think of some creative solutions. It was challenging yet rewarding to witness our ideas come to life through meticulous research and thoughtful presentation. Overall, I am so glad that my team won this competition. Of course, here I would like to thank the teachers and friends that supported us. Without their encouragement, we would not be able to get to where we are today.
