An award-winning season for ELC

ELC is beaming with pride! Our deepest congratulations to Ms Evon Juliana Jayanthi and Mr Dannie Mar Yi Yuan on their achievement in the Sunway-Oxbridge Essay Competition 2021 and the Best Teaching Practice Awards 2021 organized by GPEX Central respectively.

This year’s Sunway-Oxbridge Essay Competition introduced a new category C which was opened to all Malaysian secondary school teachers. Participating teachers were required to submit an essay with the word count between 1000 and 1500 on the topic “The Covid-19 pandemic has exposed the challenges of online education throughout Malaysia. How could this be alleviated in the future?” Miss Evon Juliana Jayanthi, the former Deputy Head of ELC, successfully bagged a consolation prize.

Ms Evon Juliana Jayanthi (ELC Teacher)

It’s a good experience participating and winning a prize in the Sunway Oxbridge Essay Competition this year. It’s the first time the organisers have introduced the teachers category. I personally feel the topic is suitable especially after experiencing close to 2 years of online teaching and learning. This has also given me an opportunity to reflect on my own teaching. I have always had a strong interest in writing since young and some of my articles have been published in The Star newspaper. I strongly believe the more you write, the easier it gets. Personally, taking part in this competition is also a way to model and motivate my students to write. I’m also equally happy that two students from my class, S2 Melbourne, have also won the Top Participant Award this year. Congratulations to all who have won and to those who didn’t win, don’t ever give up!

On the other hand, Mr Dannie Mar Yi Yuan won the Best Teaching Practice Award (CELT-S category) organized by GPEX Central. The competition was held with an aim to discover what the best teaching practice in the ELT industry within a community is. Mr Dannie Mar who has completed his CELT-S teacher-training course, submitted a vocabulary teaching practice which integrates humour and fun with 4Cs (communication, critical Thinking, collaboration & creativity). He also submitted a video to briefly explain what his best teaching practice was.

Mr Mar Yi Yuan (ELC Teacher)

It is truly a humbling experience and honor to receive the award. I didn’t know I was going to win as I was just submitting to test out the water. However, I am earnestly grateful for this recognition, because I am very sure that every teacher who submitted and shared their best teaching practices are as capable and worthy to be praised, if not more. This award is not just a moment, it is a movement for me to strengthen my journey as an educator.

Also, winning this award would not have been possible without the inspiration that I have received from my mentors, for whom I have the deepest respect, and from whom I have derived the strength to challenge myself and perform better at each stage. Specifically, I would like to thank Ms Shanthini, Mdm Boo, Ms Prem, Ms Jolyn and Ms Margerat, for being my anchors of support whenever I feel less of a person. Each one of them has my deepest respect.

Again, we would like to express our warmest congratulations to Ms Evon and Mr Dannie on their impressive achievements.
