It was a marvellous moment when the ELC debate team was announced as the second runner-up in the HELP University’s Annual Asian Secondary School Online English Debate Challenge 2021, held on 9th-11th July 2021. We would like to extend our warmest congratulations to our debate team members, Chan Ning (S3 Adelaide), Yong Kai Seng (S1 London), Yong Zhi Yuee (S1 Canberra) and Lucas Tan Yun Tao (S2 Adelaide).
This annual competition was launched in 2021 by HELP University with the objective of upgrading the command of English among secondary school students from non-English medium schools, especially the Chinese Independent Secondary Schools (CISS) in Malaysia. The outcome of the event has been encouraging and there has been marked improvement in the level of confidence of the debaters, as well as their command of English.
This competition which was previously known as the HELP University National Chinese Independent Secondary School (CISS) English Debate successfully attracted 40 contesting teams from 24 non-English medium schools from Malaysia and overseas. Our debate team managed to bulldoze their way through the preliminary rounds, octo-finals, and quarter-finals, and was awarded the second runner-up.
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the trainer, Mr Zazuan, for coaching our debaters diligently and giving them a lot of professional guidance during the training sessions. We are truly proud of our debaters as the chief adjudicator commented that our team had had an overall good and impressive performance. It was also mentioned that the debaters had demonstrated amazing chemistry and teamwork, and they had been able to provide concrete cases and understandable clarifications during the debate.
Lastly, we would like to express our appreciation to Tan Sri Yeoh Tiong Lay & Puan Sri Tan Kai Yong Aided Hin Hua High School English Language Centre Teachers & Students Training Charitable Fund for funding the year-long English debate training.
Chan Ning (S3 Adelaide)It was a fantastic experience representing the school one last time in a debate competition. I also had the pleasure of working with my teammates and honing my skills alongside them during our training periods. I am proud to see that our efforts have paid off well and that we have made it considerably far in the competition. I sincerely hope my teammates have benefited from the experience, and I would like to extend my thanks towards
them as well as all parties involved in preparing us for the competition.
Yong Zhi Yuee(S1 Ottawa)
I had never participated in a debate competition before, let alone one where I had to represent my school. Therefore, I am very proud of myself and grateful to have been able to compete alongside and learn from my seniors. To be able to face off different teams and get into the semi-finals and become one of the top 50 speakers among 120 participants is a great experience for me. Of course, I won’t just stop here because of this achievement. I give my best wishes to my fellow teammates to overcome any obstacles that come their way.
Yong Kai Seng (S1 London)
It has been both my greatest honour and pleasure to have participated in the HELP debate competition, especially with my fellow teammates. Despite the pandemic, it turned out to be a fruitful yet arduous journey. We went through the ups and downs during training as well as the competition rounds together. "Those who carve the moon, retain the clouds, shape the mountains, tame the seas are the creators of the world they shaped for themselves.” The HELP debate competition has been quite the experience, the practices were tiring and stressful, yet it created the results on that day for everyone. Kudos to my fellow teammates and thank you. :)
Lucas Tan Yun Tao (S2 Adelaide)
This is my first time participating in a debate competition. I gained a lot of new knowledge and experience from this competition. My teammates and I had worked hard for this competition for a long time. I am glad that we could advance to the semi-finals, and our hard work has really paid off. I feel proud to celebrate such an achievement with my teammates. I hope that we can get into another competition in the future soon and overcome different challenges together.
