Story Board Competition

Reported by ELC

Story board competition was held for the first time by the English Language Centre this year. Students had shown their understanding of a literature text in sequential drawings in a creative way.

Storyboards, usually in sets of sequential drawings to tell a story, are a powerful way to visually present  information. They are widely used because pictures  combined with text offer rich information that can  entertain and inform. The pictures can be simple cartoons, photographs, or sophisticated technical diagrams. The story is broken into bite-sized chunks so that the information in each cell is focused without distraction. For the reader, it allows a tremendous amount of visual context to be absorbed in a fun, engaging way.

Through the storyboard, students convey what they think are the six main events in the story. The pictures and the text support and reinforce each other; together they tell the whole story. The main objective of this  competition is to encourage students’ literary taste and build a solid foundation for a lifelong love of reading. In doing so, it helps to promote new and constructive ideas in writing creatively in a fun way. The challenging part of this competition is where students have to illustrate exposition, rising action and conflict, falling action and resolution in an in-depth six frame
storyboard.

The competition is divided into two categories – Junior and Senior. Each team comprises not more than 5 members. The story must be based on a story/novel read and each frame must include a descriptive written     summary not more than 50 words. This competition has   provided students with space and time to work together on creating their storyboards and gain collective knowledge from their peers and also teachers in the process. Students have shown great collaboration in producing good pieces of storyboards. Team work, together with a lot of guidance from the teachers helped along the process.
The judges found it difficult to select the winners as many of the storyboards from the short list were truly the most creative pieces. Participants had shown a lot of creativity and collaborative work in producing good story boa
rds.

The award giving ceremony was also held on the 2nd September 2015 at the English  Language Centre. Winners were given certificates and also books sponsored by Scholastic Malaysia Sdn Bhd. We also take this opportunity to thank our sponsor for their continuous support..

This is what the winners of the Best Storyboard (Junior Category) have to say:
“When we were first informed that we had won the Best Storyboard for Junior Category, we were actually surprised and also thrilled. We never thought that we had the chance to win. We tried our best in doing the storyboard and often met after school to complete our project. We faced many problems in the process but because of our strong teamwork, we managed to complete it on time. We gained new experience such as being more creative and also improving on our teamwork skills through this project. We are really honoured to be chosen as one of the winners and we thank our teacher, Ms Evon for her guidance and feedback and also our friends.”
