Write their way to recognition! 8 Hinhuarians Awarded as Top Participants in Sunway-Oxbridge Essay Competition 2022

Our warmest congratulations to Bradley Lau Wei Jian, Chan Yee Qi, Eugene Lee Xin Zhe, Evelyn Lee Kai Ying, Lim Xin Yee, Tee Song Jie, Yew Jin Qian and Yu Kai Jun on their achievement in the Sunway-Oxbridge Essay Competition 2022!

In its 9th year, the competition aims to equip secondary-level students with skills such as English proficiency, critical reasoning, creativity, as well as emotional intelligence that will prepare them for their future. Sunway Education Group Chief Executive Officer Professor Elizabeth Lee said she hopes to instil a sense of pride for our country and unity among races in our students.

With the theme “Humility”, participants in Category A (Form One to Three) were asked to write a 200 - 350 word essay on “Malaysia is a country with religious diversity. Discuss how mutual respect can help people from different religious beliefs coexist harmoniously.” Meanwhile, Category B (Form Four to Five) needed to write a 500 - 650 word essay on the topic, "Malaysia is a multiracial country. Make an argument for a more inclusive school that values the diverse backgrounds and perspectives of its students and outline the benefits this would bring."

A virtual announcement ceremony was held on 16 July 2022 to honour and recognise all winners and participants of the Sunway Oxbridge Essay Writing competition. There were a total of 2,494 submissions from 383 schools. Top 50 winners, selected from each category, were announced virtually on that day. A total of 8 students from our school received the top participant award, and were presented with e-certificates.

We would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to the Top Participant Award recipients on their exceptional achievement once more. We hope they will continue to sharpen their literary skills and realise their literary goals in the near future.

Lim Xin Yee (J2 Melbourne)
When Ms Chua posted an assignment about the competition, I showed no interest. However, I still decided to take part in it in order to gain bonus marks. I referred to the slides provided by Ms Chua, and did some research on the topic of the essay. When I saw my name appear on the list of top participants, I was shocked and ecstatic. I am honoured to be one of the top participants in the competition. I’d like to thank Ms Chua for giving me the opportunity to take part in this competition.

Eugene Lee Xin Zhe (J3 Chicago)
To be honest, I was quite taken aback when I was informed of being one of the top participants in this competition. However, it was actually not that surprising as I had treated this competition seriously throughout the whole writing process. I listed out all the points that I could think of and spent time doing research on the topic. Then, I wrote my essay and revised it based on the comments given by my teacher. In short, I realised that we should read more books and model essays to improve our writing skills and at the same time broaden our knowledge on the use of vocabulary to express our ideas on the topic more effectively.
