Karry Goh(家长)

Lesson Study - “When we collaborate, we improve” 01

The Teacher Sharing among Chinese Independent Secondary Schools in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Negeri Sembilan  was successfully hosted by the English Language Centre (ELC) of Hin Hua High School on 4th August 2018. The focus of this sharing was on Lesson Study which emphasises the importance of collaboration, and thus the theme was “When we collaborate, we improve”.  It involved an introduction of Lesson Study and 9 parallel interactive workshops presented by all English teachers at ELC with the aims to enable the participants to grasp the concept of lesson study, cultivate collaborative culture and
experience different teaching strategies. This sharing was ended with a question and answer session led by Mdm Boo, the vice-principal and head of English Language Centre, Dr Teoh Hee Cheong, the head of Teaching and Learning Research and Development committee  and members of the ELC Management Committee.

The event brought together eleven independent Chinese schools around Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah, Kelantan and Kuantan. Besides the sharing of lesson study, this event also provided a valuable networking opportunity and set the stage for further cooperation among teachers in independent Chinese secondary schools in Peninsular Malaysia.

The conference began with an opening remark by the vice-principal and head of ELC, Mdm Boo. She began her speech by welcoming all participating schools and emphasised the need to conduct continuous professional development (CPD) programmes in order to assist all students to acquire essential English language skills for their future. She added, as teachers, one must not only have the subject knowledge and ability to teach, but also the right attitude. This will lead teachers towards effective teaching and learning, organizing their work well and also adding value to their work.

Lesson Study - “When we collaborate, we improve” 02

During the closing ceremony, there was an exchange of opinions and clarification of some issues concerning teaching and learning across the floor. In response to a participant’s doubt about the practicality of lesson study while teachers are always under stress to complete teaching a book, Mdm Boo encouraged the teachers to be selective on the lessons that require teaching and assign self-study tasks; in addition, the scheme of work should serve as a guide where flexibility is allowed. When a concern was raised regarding the limitations on conducting student-centred activity in large classes, Mdm Boo emphasised that collaborative activities which involve pair and group work can be conducted even in large classes if the teachers could cultivate habits among students to quickly form teams from adjacent seats without having to move about much. The Q & A session was ended by Dr Teoh with a summary of the implementation of Lesson Study in Hin Hua High School.

The feedback received from the participants was very encouraging. Many commented positively about how well the workshops were conducted by Hin Hua English  teachers. One of the participants said, “This workshop provides a clear insight of real education, in which most education institutions are commercialized due to contemporary society pressure. Lesson study is well defined and explained for teachers to carry out the study.” Another also added, “The post- teaching activities were fun and very engaging. There was good teamwork shown by Hin Hua High school teachers.” All participants went home with knowledge gained from the two workshops, different learning experience and copies of materials shared by the presenters.

ELC would like to extend its appreciation to Segi College for its sponsorship of tote bags, ELC Ambassador’s Club, English Society, Photography Society, Scouts, Junior & Senior research presenters, two emcees from J1 Wellington and all involved in making this event a success.

“2018 The Belt and Road, our future global youth summit” 01

On 18th-23rd March 2018, seven student representatives from Hin Hua High School: Alicia Tan, Lee Mei Chie, Goo Ruo Yun, Nicholas Chow, Kam Sue Herng, Derek Yuen, Wong Kuan Hua, and Mr. Lee Huei Shyang, attended an international forum named “2018 The Belt and Road, our future global youth summit” hosted by the Affiliated High School of Peking University, Beijing. The summit had the objective to promote collaboration between students from different backgrounds, engage in dialogue and understand key global issues in relation to the benefits of the Belt and Road Initiative. The organizers of the event had invited more than 100 secondary school students from 8 different countries to participate in this event.

For the summit, our seven student delegates had to prepare a 15-minute presentation on two topics, ‘The historical significance the old silk road brought upon Malaysia.” and ‘How the Belt and Road Initiative is transforming our country, Malaysia‘. Here, we would like to express our gratitude to Puan Sri Tan Kai Yong for her encouragement and support, our former principal Mdm Ng Swee Geok, the principal Mr Soh Chin Choon, vice-principal Madam Boo, and teachers: Mr. Yan Wei Yang and Mr Lee Huei Shyang for providing us help and support along the way. Besides teachers from our school, we were also given help by a lawyer, Mr Loh Chang Woo, who gave invaluable feedback on the content of our presentations.

After one month of preparations, the big day finally arrived. The group departed from KLIA and arrived in Beijing at 3 in the morning due to a flight delay of 8.5 hours. Despite the harsh cold weather, the group was given a warm welcome by the co-director of the summit and brought a smile to everyone’s face. In spite of having only just an hour of sleep, we got ready for the first day.

“2018 The Belt and Road, our future global youth summit” 02

On the first day, the delegates were required to be dressed in traditional costumes that represent the multicultural Malaysia. We prepared the Malay, Indian and the Peranakan costume to brighten the event. During the opening ceremony of the Belt and Road Initiative Global Youth Summit 2018, opening speeches were given by the principal and the director of the school. The event was hosted to shed light on the Belt and Road Initiative and to promote inter-school relations in the surrounding region. They were followed by two special guests who shared stories of encouragement and their way of changing the world, such as the Omni Processors in China.

After the speeches, we were ushered into a classroom to present our views on the topics given in front of an audience of 5 schools. Alicia, Derek and Sue Herng took the stage as they presented their topic entitled “The Historical Significance of the Old Silk Road brought upon Malaysia”. We shared about the stories of Zheng He, the Straits-born Chinese, the cultural and historical background that gave birth to the multicultural Malaysia. Subsequently, the delegates of other schools presented their topics respectively regarding their country. From the ancient, mighty Persia, to the entrepôt of Temasik, it was a history textbook brought to life.

The second topic presented by the group was on “How the Belt and Road Initiative is transforming our country, Malaysia”. Lee Mei Chie, Nicholas, Kuan Hua and Ruo Yun shared about the developing projects in Malaysia, including the Malacca Gateway, the East-Coast Rail Link (ECRL), the Xiamen University campus and many others. They talked about the economic benefits that our country could reap from foreign investments through these projects. Following our school’s presentation, the representatives of other schools presented their topics respectively.

Apart from making presentations, we enjoyed tons of entertaining and interesting activities, such as making a stadium prototype that reflected our country’s culture and having a small discussion about investing an imaginary country. Not only that, we went on a campus tour of Peking University where the architectures of ancient Chinese buildings blended beautifully with the stunning scenery of the lake and the surrounding flora. Following that, we had a field trip to the Great Wall of China and the Beijing National Stadium. It was definitely a trip to remember.

Student Research Showcase 2018 01

The Student Research Showcase 2018 once again took the centre stage of attraction displaying skills and talents from both Senior and Junior presenters at the Humanities Corridor of Hin Hua High School! The Senior Two and Senior Three English for Academic Purposes (EAP) classes successfully showcased their research on two consequent days on
23rd and 24th July, followed by Junior Two and Three classes on the 25th and 26th July, 2018.

Mr. Soh, the principal and Mdm Boo, the vice-principal and head of ELC and Ms. Evon the deputy head of ELC launched the EAP Showcase themed ‘Together Everyone Achieves More’ on the 23rd July at 9.10am. This event was witnessed by the research presenters, students and ELC teachers.

Soon after the official opening ceremony, teachers and students visited the booths which had interesting topics ranging from school matters and right up to students’ personalities.  Some of the interesting topics presented were “A Study on the Effects of Artificial Intelligence on the Human Race, The Usage Of Life Compass : A Case Study Among Senior Three Students, Digital Attendance: A Case Study Among Senior Three Students and Gender Roles and Career Choices: A Qualitative Case Study Among The Senior Three Students.” The research on Digital Attendance showed that the implementation of this system will benefit both the students and teachers in terms of time and classroom management. Another research entitled “The study on effects of Artificial Intelligence on the Human Race” revealed an interesting finding where artificial intelligence is found to pose a greater threat to humanity because  humans will lose their jobs as artificial intelligence advances as the future is rather unpredictable. All participants not only presented with confidence, but they also displayed very informative information in their posters. The student research showcase was a unique platform where the participants built effective communication skills and confidently presented the value of their research to the general audience. There was an encouraging turn out from both the teachers and students during these four days.

Student Research Showcase 2018 02

Wong Xin Yi (J2 Darwin)
On the first day of the research showcase, we were totally inexperienced and scared out of our minds. We didn’t do a good job explaining and we were stuttering on our words. But we admit that we weren’t well prepared in the first place and we didn't have a clue on how it was going to be like. When the second day rolled around, we worked together really well and it wasn’t so bad. We all had fun and our teacher even gave us drinks! A few days later, our teacher told us that we were going to be doing a display that Saturday when the teachers were having a workshop. Somehow, somebody thought that we were good and this good news sent a ripple of surprise through our team. That day, not many came to our stand, but a few people did and we tried our best. We got compliments and we’re really proud to be a part of this and it would be amazing if we do something like that again.

Low Shi Yun (J3 Chicago)
At first, we were really worried about having this showcase as it is our first time joining the research project showcase. Making the poster was a big challenge for the four of us because we were busy with our sports day event the week before this research showcase. Luckily it worked out in the end. We learned a lot from this showcase especially the ways to present in public. It's our pleasure to have this opportunity to share our ideas and opinions in front of our friends and teachers.

Wesley Lau Wei Zhong (S2 Washington)
In all honesty, I felt very honoured to have been chosen to present my research project. The research project was very intimidating at first as I was a newbie with zero ideas on how to conduct a research. But as the project progressed, I began to understand how research was conducted and how the report of said project was written and it was all very fascinating. I am very fortunate that I get this opportunity to learn about research and able to share this experience with my other friends who are not from Hin Hua High School. I want to thank Ms. Radha for her patience and teachings throughout this entire project. And also to my classmate and friend, Derek for he inspired me to have the desire to do my best.

Christopher Lim Min Je (S2 Washington)
Looking back at the first time when we (our class) were told to do the research project, to be frank, we're actually a bit dumbfounded. But when I tried to think on the brighter side, it would be good to prepare us for university studies, so my team completed the project without any complaints, we had learnt much on research skills too! Especially when we were first taught how to do a literature review and how to include an appendix, we were able to  do something we only get to see in academic reports. It was both new and interesting for us as we were exposed to academic learning tasks  as early as in high school. Also, there was a presentation of our research to teachers from other Chinese independent schools who attended a workshop on 4th August. In general, the entire project is a fresh breath of air amongst our regular English studies.

6th Selangor and Kuala Lumpur Inter-Schools English Forum 2018 01

The 6th Selangor and Kuala Lumpur Eight Chinese Independent Secondary Schools Combined English Forum 2018 was held successfully at Chung Hua High School on 11th August 2018 from 8.00am to 2.00pm. This competition was organized by the United Chinese School Committees Association of Selangor and Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur and co-organised by Chung Hua High School, Klang.  Hin Hua High School team formed by Derek Yuen Yee Jun (Chairperson), Kam Sue Herng (Panelist 1), Lim Jia Sheng, Joshua (Panelist 2), Bernard Siow Terng Fong (Panelist 3) and Pang May Chih (Reserve) won the First Prize, whilst, Derek Yuen Yee Jun won the Best Chairperson Award.

The objectives of this forum competition are to improve the level of proficiency in English, particularly in their speaking skills amongst students in the Independent Chinese Secondary Schools, to provide an opportunity for students to showcase their public speaking talents, a platform for interactions between students and to raise their awareness on current and social issues.

The topic entitled ‘Welcome to Lah Lah Land’ and a few slips with unexpected technical problems, which seemed to be a blessing in disguise, captured the adjudicators’ attention on the overall performance of the team. Their confidence and poise showed they were able to handle the situation well. The team also stood out because of the chemistry of teamwork they had on stage.  The panelists played their roles as a local who is familiar with the slang, the president of the linguistic society in Hin Hua High School, a Senior 3 student who is familiar with speaking Manglish and an exchange student from the UK.

The team brilliantly discussed the topic into bite-sized melt-in-your-mouth information as they described in their opening. The adjudicators were impressed with the high level of intellectual discourse in the discussion among the panelists. The topics presented were prevalent and the presenters spoke eloquently. The question and answer session was handled amazingly well by the team with personal views included. Some of the interesting points brought up by the panelists were on how Manglish came about, the effects of speaking Manglish and how foreigners perceive the usage of Manglish.

The esteemed panel of adjudicators also advised participants to be careful when it comes to having an accent and not to show such a remote role. Presenters also need to recognize the importance of choosing a topic and how to express one’s views. They need to have the belief that they know the topic well. This will build confidence in them and lead to a natural and well-presented forum.
Again, we congratulate our school representatives on their great achievement and look forward to their constant effort in self-improvement.

6th Selangor and Kuala Lumpur Inter-Schools English Forum 2018 02

Derek Yuen Yee Jun (S2 Washington)
I was honoured to be able to represent our school to participate in this forum competition.  There were a lot of obstacles along the way when we were preparing for the competition, but I believe it was exactly this reason why our forum presentation was able to shine. Through all the struggles we had faced, through all the practices we had done, through all the times we had shared and we had laughed, we created a strong bond that cemented our presentation. It was this friendship that allowed us to fill in the gaps, and create something special. And all of these could never be achieved without my team. I would like to thank everyone who has been supporting us on our journey, and to me, this will surely be one of my most memorable moments in high school.

To all my fellow teammates, thank you, for you guys have surpassed my every expectation and together construct a memory that I will forever cherish. Singing songs might not be part of our scheduled practices, but it worked to our advantage as to create our special “chemistry”. I am proud of you all, and I am glad that I was able to join all of you in this year’s forum.

Looking back at the pictures we took during the competition, I can say that this competition is really an unforgettable one for me. Honestly, it is not just because of winning the competition, but also having the chance to make connections with all the talented speakers from different schools and discover new things. Every team performed really well and I was actually quite amazed at how outgoing and supportive they were, especially representatives from Kwang Hua High School. Oh, I really miss the bonding sessions!  Anyway, being able to be the champion, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to my dearest teammates who were always having my back. Thank you for all the help and care throughout the whole competition. Without all of you, I’m absolutely nothing. I do hope for more collaborations with all of you in the future !

While there are a lot of things that I can say about this competition, the number one thing I want to say is that it's not always about the results (although it is most of the time), it's also about the fun. Which would be surprising, because when most people think of a forum, they think of a boring team-speech. This is not always the case, however, if you learn to have fun. For us, it wasn't just the satisfaction of winning, it was also the happiness we got when we were jamming acapella instead of practicing, then laughing when we realised other students outside were staring at us. It's also the happiness of meeting friends of other schools (which we're still good friends with), and just overall enjoying the chemistry and having fun as a forum team. So, thanks to everyone in the team; without any of you, none of this would have happened, and a lot of memories would have been missed.

Beginner’s luck? Maybe, but nevertheless I am extremely grateful to Mdm. Boo for allowing me to join this team. It was overwhelming to achieve what we achieved; not that we had dismissed the possibility altogether, but we just did not expect to perform so well! I, for one, could never answer any of the Q & A questions properly without muttering nonsense and making weak conclusions. My teammates were extremely supportive and encouraged me in spite of this. Turned out that I managed to answer quite well, and even managed to make the judges laugh! Thanks, guys! We owe our win to the support of the ELC teachers, we owe our good performance to the strong comradeship among us teammates, and we owe our glory to God.

Pang May Chih (S2 Melbourne)
As a reserve for the team, I felt extremely grateful to be working with them throughout the forum preparation. It was a tiring process, with many script changes and problems that we stumbled upon one after another, yet we managed to pull through. My sincere thanks to ELC, for providing us with the space and freedom to approach the forum. It was an extremely enlightening experience.
